WHAT I SAW AND HOW I LIED
by Judy Blundell

2008 Young Adult Novel Nominee

RT Rating

Blundell doesn't miss a step. This is a smart, complex story with a terrific mystery and brilliant characters. Set just after World War II, it captures the era with real pathos and an ugly dose of reality.

Evie's stepdad is home from WWII, and life looks like it'll soon get back to normal. Then Joe starts receiving mysterious phone calls and decides to take the family to Palm Beach for an impromptu vacation.

Once there, Evie does her best to get out of her glamorous mother's shadow and impress the incredibly handsome -- and much older -- Peter. Her parents, in the meantime, befriend another couple staying at the hotel. It isn't long until Evie surmises that perhaps this vacation has sinister undertones -- and that Peter and her parents' new friends may not be exactly who they seem.
