Dr. Rita Brooks has generally avoided romantic commitment in her life. But a friendship that started on the Internet has her possibly ready to reconsider.

Rita has been corresponding with New Orleans resident Brian LaPorte, but before they get the opportunity to meet, Rita is deliberately run off the road by another car and ends up in a coma.

In New Orleans, Brian has also been targeted—someone shoved him off a balcony and now he too is in a coma. Just before Rita awakens, she has strange images of a man showing her the events of his accident.

When Brian's brother Christopher comes to question Rita about their relationship, Rita tells him her vision. Everyone thinks Brian attempted suicide, but Rita knows different. Convincing anyone of this fact could be difficult, however. But Rita won't back down, and with Christopher's help, she'll unlock the buried secrets in Brian's life.

The move to harder-edged suspense has certainly paid off for the multitalented Wainscott. She has joined the ranks of top-notch purveyors of gripping and intense suspense. (Oct., 384 pp., $6.99)
