Harlow’s first Midnight Magic story, in which Mona struggles to make her life run smoothly, is intriguing. There are twists and turns around every corner in this lively mystery.

Mona McGregor is not only a witch, but a high priestess who leads a large coven and runs the Midnight Magic Shop in Goodnight, Va. Her deadbeat sister Ivy shows up and drops her two daughters off. When one of the girls needs medical help, she rushes her to the clinic where the handsome doctor she dreams about works. When he shows interest in her, Mona decides to see where it will lead. But when battered and bloody werewolf Jason arrives at her house, he brings a shocking revelation: One of Mona’s witches is trying to kill her. As Jason and Mona try to figure who is out to kill her, she has to decide what her heart is telling her. (MIDNIGHT INK, Mar, 336 pp., $14.99)
