Debut author Moseley writes a compelling story. Miranda’s will to fight oppression is heartfelt and Jack’s incessant need to be, well, Jack is both frustrating and charming. As the characters grow throughout the story, readers will embrace them and never want to let go.

Widow Miranda Hanford wants to break the hold her pastor has over her. But he knows all her secrets and is blackmailing her into submission. Jack Hanford is concerned about his estranged sister-in-law and her children, both their sheltered living conditions and the hold Mason has over the family. He seeks to make changes before anyone gets hurt. (MULTNOMAH, May, 352 pp., $13.99)
