This mother-daughter writing team is a powerhouse, and their writing styles have come together to create this beautiful story filled with romance, misunderstandings and courage. The well-written characters have their strengths and weaknesses on display. The details of the Canadian frontier are vivid, but not overwhelming.

Beth Thatcher lives in the lap of luxury, but she wants more than what she has always taken for granted. She accepts a teaching job in Coal Valley, Canada, where she won’t have access to the luxuries she is used to. Coal Valley is in worse shape than she thought. After a mining accident, the residents are at the mercy of the mine owners, who don’t seem to care what happens to the townspeople. Meanwhile, there are two men vying for Beth’s attention: One is a longtime friend, and the other is quiet, kind and has come to her aid more than once. When her sister visits, Beth needs to decide if she wants to stay and help, or go back to her privileged life. (Bethany House, Feb., 336 pp., $19.99)
