Selling Captain Nick Trask on the benefits of the new safety system she's designed for firefighters is quite a hurdle for Sloane Hillyard, but shrugging off her reaction to him is bigger still. Closed off emotionally by a series of personal tragedies, the last thing Sloane wants is any involvement, but something about Nick gets to her. Kristin Hardy launches her Holiday Hearts trilogy with Where There's Smoke (4.5), a powerful, poignant story highlighted by subtly shaded characterizations, flashes of wry wit and intense sexual tension.
