More a historical tale with a romantic subplot, this book will have readers feeling like they are part of the harrowing wagon train heading west on an exciting, amazing journey that they won’t want to end. Dobson’s characters face a variety of threats as they seek better lives.

When tragedy strikes on their journey to Oregon Country, 18-year-old Samantha promises her parents she will take care of her brother. With obstacles along the way, they are determined to reach Willamette Valley before winter. When their canoe overturns on the river, they accept the help of Englishman Alex Clarke, to accompany them to Fort Vancouver. Settling into new surroundings is challenging, but with the help of Alex, Samantha gains an unforeseen outlook on her new life. (SUMMERSIDE, Oct., 336 pp., $12.99)
