The adventure of BAD operative Carlos Delgado is a very readable romantic suspense with plenty of evil drug lords and a beautiful geek heroine. The book is too long, which makes the action lag at times, but if readers stick with it, the ending is very satisfying.

The BAD operatives hear about the kidnapping of a young girl, including the location where she's being held. Mirage, the informant, is a ghostly Internet figure, wanted by Interpol, who seems to know an awful lot about illegal operations. BAD finds the girl and rescues her, but they really want to find out more about Mirage. Carlos barely gets off the plane from the rescue mission when he's hot on the trail of Mirage, who turns out to be a lovely innocent named Gabrielle.

Soon, Gabrielle is in BAD custody, and Carlos is her guard. She has a lot of information about the Anguis family, a drug operation in South America, and Carlos also has some secrets about the Anguis, which he must keep at all costs. In a safe house or on the run with Gabrielle, he can't let his feelings for her distract him from his duty. (POCKET, May, 514 pp., $15.00)
