Mady Donovan has just turned 35 and is having second thoughts about her career path and life in general, so she jumps at the chance to join her friend on a wilderness adventure in Washingtons North Cascades. Although Eva is the spontaneous and adventurous one, when she breaks her leg and is unable to come, Mady begrudgingly agrees to go alone.

She is teamed with a pair of rich Greek siblings, a young newly-wed couple and a man she finds frustratingly attractive. Jason Tiber might be her type if she didnt find him so arrogant, He has a God-sized chip on his shoulder she could almost touch. Mady loves God and is not about to get involved with a man who doesnt share her passion.

When Mady and Jason are conveniently partnered, the friction intensifies. When they become stranded in the woods, they must learn to depend on each other and God.

Although WILDERNESS promises adventure it doesnt quite deliver, the romantic tension and the characters are quite likable. Karen Balls newest novel should please fans looking for a romance with a spiritual take-away. (Nov., 250 pp., $6.99)
