THE WINTER QUEEN
In her glimpse of the holiday season at Queen Elizabeth's court, McCabe brings the backdrop and actual historical personages into sharp focus. Unfortunately this leaves her main characters as secondary elements of the story.
Her parents send Rosamund Ramsay to court in hopes she will forget her unsuitable sweetheart. On the journey Rosamund encounters the Swedish delegation and is immediately intrigued by handsome, charming Anton Gustavson.
Anton is enchanted with Rosamund; her sweetness and naïvete are a breath of fresh air. The holidays make their blossoming attraction magical, and she begins to forget her first love. But there's a mystery afoot when a stranger masquerades as the Lord of Misrule and Rosamund's former sweetheart arrives with plans of his own. (HARLEQUIN, Nov., 300 pp., $5.99)
