This is a wonderfully fascinating story with a bit of magic. The way each woman adjusts to her situation, and the way the husbands accept what has happened in their own individual ways, makes this an intelligent page-turner.

In 1718 Scotland, Auld Annie is accused of being a witch. Magda McClellan is kind to her, so Annie offers to grant Magda a wish. Happy as she is, Magda refuses it.

In 2002 New York, Maggie McDonald and her husband long for a baby. A strange nurse named Annie can help her, but it means being separated from her husband for a while. It's not until Maggie changes places spiritually with Magda that she understands what Annie meant. While Magda's Davy believes that Maggie now inhabits Magda's body, Maggie's husband can't understand why his wife claims she's someone named Magda. In the past, Davy and Maggie work to find a way to switch the women back. (IUNIVERSE, Jan. 2009, 185 pp., $13.95)
