On an alternate Earth, Tremaine Valiarde wants to die, but she doesn't want to involve friends or family. She's been inviting death by working with the rescue crews in Ile-Rien bomb-ravaged Londun. When Gerard asks for her uncle's only surviving magic sphere to help stop the alien Gardier invasion, she tags along with the translocation sphere.

On a yet different world, Ilias has barely recovered from his unwanted transformation spell, yet he takes his battered body back to the sorcerer's abandoned island. Tremaine and Ilias meet while escaping the Gardiers' island headquarters on Ilias' world. It doesn't matter that Tremaine's world is posttechnical and Ilias' is preindustrial, they know that if the Gardiers aren't stopped, both their worlds will be destroyed.

Wells sets up her new fantasy trilogy with fast-paced action, interesting characters and a good story. (May, 400 pp., $24.95)
