A WOLFISH SCANDAL
by Sandra Sookoo

Genre: Historical Romance, Paranormal, E-book, America

RT Rating

While this story’s plot is chocked full of historical inaccuracies and clichés, Sookoo’s characterization of heroine Lyndal makes the novella worth reading. The author perfectly paints a picture of Lyndal’s feelings of loneliness and uselessness, which the heroine refers to as her “secondhand life.” But while Lyndal is extremely sympathetic and likeable, the hero, Grey, does nothing to endear himself to the reader. He makes rash decisions and manipulates women. Furthermore, Grey’s not-so-veiled references to the modern day television show The Bachelor fall flat with a resounding thud. However, this is the only occasion that Sookoo’s writing could be called clunky — throughout the rest of the story, the author’s prose is lyrical and engaging.

Although the Carson family lives in Indiana and are safe from the horrors of the Civil War, their youngest daughter, Lyndal, cannot be protected from her fatal heart disease. When the doctor tells her that she only has six months to live, Lyndal decides to hide her diagnosis from her family and ignore the physician’s advice to stay away from excitement and strong emotion. Instead, after years of being an obedient daughter Lyndal decides to start a scandal. And there’s no better way to do so than competing against a dozen other women for the affects of a wealthy landowner.

James Greyson Rutledge has invited several women to his estate in the hopes of finding a mate. He doesn’t quite know what to expect, but he certainly is not prepared to lose his heart to the one woman who seems to have nothing to lose. Immediately intrigued by the secretive Lyndal, Grey wants to get to know her better; however, he has a secret that makes him hesitant to commit to one woman. But with Lyndal’s time running out, she demands that he do just that or give her up for good. (LIQUID SILVER BOOKS, Feb., dl. $5.95)
