When Rachel Wells returns to Lake Como after she and her family were declared dead in a boat accident seven years ago, everyone has a lot of questions, especially Sheriff Samuel Hairston. Unbeknownst to everyone, her family's disappearance was due to their joining the Witness Protection Program.

Rachel is surprised that the feelings Sam tries to hide from her are the very feelings she herself is coping with. She does not like him, yet she wants him. But more important than desire is the determination Rachel feels about returning her life to normal, which includes restoring the cabin her family once owned.

Hailstock pens a strong, moving drama. Tension fills nearly every page—whether it's the sexual current between Sam and Rachel, or the fear that follows Rachel to Lake Como. The pacing is fast, and the intrigue and danger are just as intense as the love that develops between Sam and Rachel. (Apr., 304 pp. $6.99)
