Author's Message

Camera-shy wolf aficionado Jane Lindskold found a way to make shooting an author photo less painful—pose with Raven, a canis lupus ambassador from Candy Kitchen Rescue Ranch in New Mexico, where she lives.

Lindskold, whose characters in her Firekeeper series are part wolf, has done a tremendous amount of research on the species. "Want to see my bibliography?" she jokes, and adds, "My research extended into contact with actual wolves and a great day spent as a volunteer with the New Mexico Fish and Wildlife Department, helping transfer wolves between fenced areas."

The author racked up plenty more research hours for her new stand-alone book, The Buried Pyramid (Tor, May '04), an adventure set in the 1870s about a hunt for an Egyptian pharaoh's treasures. "I did parallel lines of research, both in modern scholarship and in period works," Lindskold says. "It was important to me that my characters not know more than [what] would have been available in their time period, but at the same time I wanted my descriptions to be as accurate as possible."

Readers will be howling glad to know the author's fourth Firekeeper book, Wolf Captured, will be published by Tor in November.
