THREE QUESTIONS FOR BEVERLY BARTON, AUTHOR OF THIS MONTH'S HQN TITLE, DANGEROUS DECEPTION:

1. Why do you write romantic suspense? It's what intrigues me. I've had a lot of editors say that one of my strong points is a little bit of melodrama, high drama. It just comes naturally to me.

Also, [I'm drawn to] mystery, to solving who did it, why they do it. As
a writer, it's almost like how a psychiatrist would get into in the mind of someone who would do this.

In fiction you have control to make sure they are captured and punished.
When I was a kid I loved Ellery Queen and tried to figure out who did it, and of course I love romance. So it's the best mix for me.

2. What is the difference between your stories for HQN and Kensington? At Kensington the books are a little grittier, more suspenseful and more mainstream, whereas the HQN books are heavy on the romance. You have the suspense and mystery plus a bit more romance.

3. With 60 books in 17 years, how do you keep your storytelling fresh? With the Protector series books, which are in several Harlequin/Silhouette lines, I deliberately try to think, 'What have I done before in the bodyguard investigation books?' and then search for something new and different.

The themes stay the same, but by creating a new hero and heroine and coming up with a fresh angle on the mystery and suspense, [the books change]. ... One theme in all my books is that they are set in the South, with a Southern hero and heroine. I am from the South, sixth-generation Alabaman, so why would I set them somewhere else?
