Embrace the Night is a special book to me for several reasons. For one, it’s the first book I ever attempted to write six (or is it seven?) years ago. It was bad. I mean, really bad. I didn’t even finish writing it, it was so bad. I set it aside and moved on to other projects, but the characters always lingered in the back of my mind, reminding me their story was untold. Last year on a lark, I put together a synopsis for it, giving it the darker and more erotic slant that my writing has taken in the last half-decade, and sent it in to my editor. He liked the idea and gave me the green light to write it. At that point, I dusted off the file, read it, and promptly decided to delete everything and start from scratch. I’d forgotten just how bad it truly was. The bones of the story were good, and so that’s where I began. With witches and warlocks, werewolves and vampires, elves and Fae. With Merek and Chloe and Chloe’s godson, Alex. With werewolf terrorists and their hunt to control the treatment that Chloe is developing for lycanthropy. With romance and love and naughty, naughty sex (for Merek and Chloe, not the terrorists).

The second reason this book is so special to me is that it’s my first full length novel in print. I tend to write more 2-in-1 or 3-in-1 anthologies, but this one is 346 pages of just one story. And I just finished writing the sequel, Night Games, and turned it in to my editor earlier this month. While Embrace the Night is a heart-pounding action adventure where the hero and heroine (Merek and Chloe) spend the book trying to escape from terrorists, Night Games is a mystery where the hero and heroine (Jack and Selina) race against the clock to track down a vampire serial killer. Night Games will be my second full novel in print, in March of next year.

I hadn’t planned on making this a series, but the world and characters took on a life of their own. Magic as a dark underlayer of society, danger around every corner. Politics, intrigue, and did I mention the dirty sex and romance? It’s just my kind of place. I had to linger a little while. Every secondary character seems to be clamoring for a story now, so with any luck, I’ll get to write them. I know for certain I want Alex to age a bit so I can give him a book. Oh, yes. I have plans for that young man. He was just supposed to be a reason to push Chloe deeper into the suspense, an excuse to thicken the plot and up the stakes, but from the first moment he hit the page, Alex reached in and grabbed ahold of me and never let go. My critique partners seemed to agree. The first thing one of them said after she read the story was, “Alex is going to get his own book, right?” Unfortunately, he’s sixteen in Embrace the Night, and seventeen in Night Games. He’s got some growing up to do. I guess I’ll have to write those other secondary characters in the meantime. Stay tuned…
