The title of my third Otter Bay novel is based on the concept of “fade to black,” the phrase that denotes a movie’s ending. Instead of black, though, Suz Mitchell’s story is about new beginnings. Therefore the title, Fade to Blue.

In the 2nd Otter Bay novel, A Shore Thing, readers learned how Suz showed up at her brother’s home, unannounced, with her young child in tow. Her husband was in jail and she had nowhere else to go—so she followed her older brother, Gage, to Otter Bay. In Fade to Blue, I wanted to figure out what happened next for the plucky single mom with the artistic bent.

Would she overcome the stigma of being a divorcée with an ex in prison?

How would she explain his father’s incarceration to her young son?

Would Suz land her dream job restoring art for the Hearst Castle—and finally make a stable, uncomplicated life for her and her child?

And what would happen if not one, but two painful past relationships followed her to Otter Bay?

As much as I’m a sucker for romance, I also love the sea, so much so that all five of my novels are set somewhere along the California coast. Fade to Blue is set in the fictional town of Otter Bay, but I’ll let you in on a secret: the setting is based on the real side-by-side towns of Cambria and San Simeon, the latter being home to the famed Hearst Castle.

Suz is a determined dreamer—and I love that about her. So I wrote this book for all you dreamers, the ones who hold on and never let go—no matter what.  You’re the ones who look toward your dreams like a faraway star. Though the earth may move beneath you, and that star fades from view, you hold your ground. Chin up. Eyes focused. Trusting God.

You know who you are. I’ve been there too. All too often, I find myself there again.

The rocky, central California coast is one of my favorite areas to visit. It’s a place where dazzling seascapes, budding romance—and in this novel—God’s grace abounds. I hope you get the chance to read Suz’s story, and that when you do, you too experience the Good Shepherd’s leading. And I also hope that you fall in love with the concepts of forgiveness, sacrifice, and grace—as much as you do the breathtaking locale.

I’d love to hear from you!
