M.J. Rose Presents IN FIDELITY

Last year, for the first time in my life I lost hope. In the fall of 1998, just as I was ending a 12-month mourning period for my mother, Doug Scofield, the man I live with, went into the hospital for a routine out-patient kidney biopsy. An hour later, his doctor told me something had gone wrong and Doug was bleeding to death. They had fifteen minutes to save his life.

He survived and spent the next two weeks in intensive care. To deal with it, I did what so many writers do. I buried myself in writing a new novel, In Fidelity.

A few weeks after Doug came out of intensive care he was back in the hospital for Christmas to begin kidney dialysis. He was in and out of the hospital more than 30 times in the next 12 months. When I was not being a caregiver, I wrote. I did it to escape into a world I could control and I did it to prove to myself that there was life outside of the illness we were facing.

After a long year of hospitals, doctors, infections and waiting, we were given an amazing Christmas present. David, Doug's brother, donated one his kidneys.

Doug was able to go back to work in less than a week and I was able to finally finish my novel. But it was only when In Fidelity was finished that I realized I had been searching for my lost hope within the pages of my novel.

This novel has kept me company and kept me going. It has also helped me put into words what I have discovered about the powerful connections between people who care about each other connections that neither time nor deed can sever.

I hope you enjoy In Fidelity with its twists and turns, and cant put it down!

To give others a chance at hope, ten percent profit on all my books will go to the Yale/New Haven Transplant Unit.

Write to me c/o Pocket Books, 1230 Sixth Ave., New York, NY 10020.
