So, do you find it exciting when the heroine of a "heart and family" category romance nearly dies in the first chapter of the book?
I mean, good exciting. Romantic exciting, because she's being held in the arms of her manly, firefighter hero, who hasn't seen her for nine months but is most likely the father of the baby she's about to deliver. Sound like another calm addition to Superromance's community-based line? Yeah? That's definitely what I was going for.
And, well ... would it be stretching things too much if the fire and rescue, never-lose-a-victim (especially a vic who's just given birth to a bouncing baby girl that might be his) hero is told in chapter three that the heroine actually DID die at the hospital? Still with me?
Because we all know our feisty leading lady can't be gone--even if I do my best to make you believe it, just for a moment. This is a romance, for heaven's sake, for a family line at Harlequin. I've got another two hundred pages or so to torment this couple with the impossible relationship they have to fight for, if they want to save themselves and their little girl.
So, there you have it. My latest take on category romance, waiting to shake, rattle and role the tried and true themes of a secret baby, a heroine on the run and in federal protection (a la "In Plain Sight"), a hero who "saves" so he doesn't have to connect with life, and a family of firefighters determined to protect their own at all costs.
