When I came up with my heroine for the book First Grave on the Right, I hoped I would get to write about her for a very long time. Charley Davidson just fit so nicely into what I wanted in a heroine: spunk, sass, sarcasm. And yet she’s flawed. It’s those flaws that make her interesting and fun to write.

Oh, who am I kidding? It’s her sarcastic nature and her penchant for trouble that makes her interesting and fun to write, but her flaws are great, too. For what are we all if not flawed? And in Fourth Grave Beneath my Feet, I really wanted those flaws to glow like a neon sign on a deserted highway. Charley is awesome. She’s capable if not a tad gullible. She’s strong if not a tad clumsy. And she’s caring to the extreme. She treats her clients with the utmost respect, as she does the departed she deals with everyday. For the most part, anyway. Sarcastic comebacks are considered a sign of respect in several cultures, from what I’ve heard.

But I had a deep fear going into Fourth Grave. I knew I wanted Charley to be suffering emotionally from certain events that happened to her in the previous book, yet I wanted her to be her same sarcastic self. What’s a girl with a fetish for inappropriate sarcasm to do? Let the character do what she does best, that’s what. Believe it or not, I had to trust Charley to do the right thing.

I know, I know. Technically I am Charley. I guess what I mean to say is that I had to quit stalling and just write the darn book. So, I let go of the worry and let Charley do her thing, and she came through with flying colors, all the while dealing with the aftermath of trauma and trying to solve the case of a woman who claims someone is trying to kill her.

But wait! There’s more!

Yep, you guessed it, she also has to deal with a loveable gang of bank robbers — one of whom wants her dead, a father who is trying to make amends in all the wrong ways, an annoying but well-meaning group of family and friends, and the deliciously infuriating son of evil incarnate.

So, you know, everyday stuff.

I hope you enjoy reading Fourth Grave Beneath my Feet as much as I enjoyed writing it!
