Message From The Author
Johanna Lindsey fans have been kept on hold for nearly six years waiting for the final installment of her three-book futuristic series. The wait is now over. Its been a long haul for expectant fans, since the first publication of Warriors Woman debuted 10 years ago. But this month, Lindsey finally takes readers back to the future where her story first began.
How is it that a historical author takes her pen more than 100 years into the future? Johanna Lindsey would tell you that she virtually had no choice. She was baited by a Mock II computer named Martha, who began pestering her while she was finishing a western novel. She wouldnt leave me alone, Lindsey recalls. Long conversations and scenes were coming to me No idea ever took such hold of me like that before, pretty much demanding life.
Who could ignore a free thinking, wise-cracking super machine, built in another star system light years away2139 according to Earth timeand nearly omniscient in its capabilities of monitoring and recording distant places?
Not many. But Ms. Lindsey wasnt looking to switch genres, and yet her marvelously mouthy Mock II computer certainly didnt belong in a historical. It demanded a strange new setting. The heroine logically would
be Marthas owner, Tedra De Arr, a fiery amazon beauty. Their world was obviously advanced in technology, science, and social strata. But they werent alone. Lindsey found other worlds to create, from a neighboring star system. Ones with people who werent so civilized, but mirror our lost medieval days.
It was the perfect historical twist and the ideal rival to Marthas world. The idea also gave Lindsey a brilliant structure for a big book. Each of these books has pretty much been a clash of cultures to the extreme, future vs. past, man vs. woman and the challenge is finding out if the two can co-exist. Lindsey set the heroines on one side of these extremesthe advanced civilized futuristic planetsand her heroes on the other, representing the unpolished ways of the past. Her premise pushes the battle of the sexes to its limits. And then, love becomes the defining equation that bridges the gap.
The heroines in each of the three novels are sophisticated and intelligent, physically strong, and sizable; the heroes are raw, aggressive, territorial forces of nature who bring women into their world, which requires submission and obedience (medieval, indeed!).
In the first book, Warriors Woman, the planet Krystan is brutally invaded by medieval barbarians from a neighboring star system. For all its intelligence, Krystan is losing the battle for lack of brawnand by waging war by the rules. Martha and Tedra, a security guard, escape to seek help. They find Challen, a dominating yet honorable muscle-bound barbarian from a less aggressive medieval planet. Challen Ly-San-Ter might help to save her planet, but chances are that he wont let her go.
The second book, Keeper of the Heart (96), follows Tedra and Challens daughter, Shanelle, who struggles with trading her independence for obedience. Aided and abetted by her mothers Mock II, she flees the champion warrior hand-picked for her by her father and takes off on an intergalactic spree. Falon Vanyer is not keen on her disobedience and pursues her at every turn. He seeks to not only punish her, but also to prove his love and honor.
For the series grand finale, HEART OF A WARRIOR, Dalden Ly-San-Ter arrives on Earth. With Martha as his co-pilot, language translator, strategist, and nag, he follows a wayward high king whos looking for a kingdom to go with his title and who plans on subduing some unsuspecting planet with mind-altering rods. But before Dalden can complete his task, he meets Brittany Callaghn, a six-foot-tall construction worker whos been having trouble finding a suitable earthlinga man strong enough to handle her size and her masculine hobbies. The question remains, is Brittany strong enough to handle Daldens world and his demands once he decides that she is his lifemate?
This series really is just pure fun, a chance to give the imagination free reign. Lindsey says. Zipping around make-believe galaxies, readers are introduced to a League of Planets dedicated to life appreciation, miraculous healing technology, Mock IIs, intergalactic battles Ms. Lindsey delivers an enchanting joy ride through the most basic story of all: mating for lifeand its inherent conflicts.
