Dear Reader,

I’m a movie lover. I go to the movies almost every week. I watch movies at home. I have a passion for old black-and-white films, and I’ve been known to spend entire weekends tuned to Turner Classic Movies.

As a kid growing up in New York, it was a rare treat to see a movie in Manhattan at one of the big movie palaces. But most of the time I went to the movies at a small-town theater called “The Squire.” It had only one screen and no stadium seating, although there was a balcony. I cannot tell you how many boxes of Dots I consumed in that theater while watching classic movies that ranged from My Fair Lady to 101 Dalmations.

In the summertime, I went to the movies at The Dane, another single-screen theater. This one located in the tiny South Carolina town of Denmark where I spent school vacations. Denmark’s downtown isn’t more than two blocks long, so the Dane’s lights lit it up from one end to the other. Alas, it showed its last movie in 1979.

I love multiplex theaters. I love stadium seating and 3D. But I can’t help but feel that we’ve lost something by abandoning these small, single screen theaters located on our main streets. I suppose this is why Savannah White, the heroine of Last Chance Book Club, has this crazy dream of reviving The Kismet, Last Chance’s local movie house, and giving it a new lease on life.

Of course, she doesn’t have a business plan, or money, or the first idea of how a small theater could compete with the big multiplexes, but, hey, that’s what heroes are for. And Dash Randall has more business sense than he gives himself credit for. He just has to figure out a way to get Savannah to listen—not an easy feat by any means.

I had a lot of fun vicariously reviving The Kismet. And I salute all the heroes in small — and medium —sized towns who are trying to save these single-screen theaters. I hope you enjoy reading about Savannah and her quest.
