Author's Message

By Cindy Schwalb

For 20 years, Connie Mason has been taking readers on one passionate historical adventure after another. She remains loyal to
the historical romance genre
while other authors have gone
"contemporary" or taken the romantic suspense route. And today, her ongoing oeuvre totals more than 40 adventures that take place around the globe. Her latest is the Regencyset The Last Rogue.

Mason's career began when the last of her three children left for college. She and her husband sold the family home, a rambling three-story farmhouse tucked away in Buchanan, Michigan (it had been in Mason's family since 1885), to pursue their dreams. His took them to Florida and involved two fishing boats and lots of time on the water; hers brought Dorchester Publishing and Alicia Condon, Mason's longtime editor, into their lives. Looking back, Condon says, "It's no surprise that Connie's books have been favorites with readers for 20 years. Her writing has all the best elements of classic historical romance."

Launching her romance writing career at 50 with the sale of Tender Fury, Mason swept readers from England to New Orleans during the
War of 1812. Instant admiration from readers
and fellow authors followed.

Media outlets that normally don't pay attention to authors—from The National Enquirer to TV's 48 Hours—wanted to interview the romance writer who wrote those kind of books at her age. (Mason's career certainly puts those age stereotypes to bed!)

Maintaining her "reputation" throughout two decades, Mason has presented cowboys, Indians, pirates on the high seas, sexy desert sheiks, daring Vikings, bold medieval knights, dashing rakes and
rogues of Regency England, Colonial American rebels and
Civil War heroes.

RT BOOKclub historical reviewer Kathe Robin says readers can always count on Mason for "fast-paced, exciting adventures with detailed historical backdrops
that showcase sizzling passion and steamy love scenes between an alpha hero
and fiery heroine."

This month, fans will meet The Last Rogue, Lucas Viscount Westmore, who stumbles upon a female smuggler in over her head. And later this year comes the Pirate Prince, a royal sultan
who flees Turkey when his tyrannical brother begins killing off siblings in line for the throne. Chance gives him the opportunity to bargain his rogue brother's English bride for his remaining family.

A military wife married for 54 years,
Mason, who's lived in Germany and Thailand, still seeks out new adventures. She recently returned from tracking modern-day gypsies through Eastern Europe, research for 2005's aptly titled Gypsy Lover.

When asked, what adventure she'd
choose if time travel became possible, the
70-year-old author responds, "I'd go to the California Gold Rush era. Maybe I'd be one of those madams making a lot of money with her girls." Wait till The National Enquirer hears that one!
