Message From The Author

Author's Message

How many authors can boast a perfect record? As her 40th novel, A MAN TO
CALL MY OWN, hits bookstores, Johanna Lindsey has a lot to brag about.
Her streak of 39 New York Times bestsellers, which includes several that reached No. 1, began when she became one of Nancy Coffey's Avon ladies in 1977. Captive Bride was an eye-popping, sensual tale about a proper Englishwoman forced into
a harem—one of the hottest captive/captor themes during that period.

It's no wonder Lindsey likens her career to a fairy tale. In the beginning, she says, "There just weren't enough romances being published back in 1972, so to fill in the time between reads I wrote my own. I didn't start writing with the intention/hope of getting published, I was just amusing myself. But that first book seemed to write itself, and within a few months, I actually had a finished story. I figured, what the heck, might as well send it off and see what happenes." Lindsey's career has been charmed ever since. With her natural talent for delivering consistently well-developed characters, compelling action and vivid details, readers have embraced all her releases—from English and Scottish medievals to Viking tales, westerns and futuristics.

In return, Lindsey remains steadfast in her loyalty to fans, despite rarely going on tour. For example, for more than a decade she resisted the move to hardcover, not wanting loyal fans to have to pay more for her books—until readers made it clear that they wanted the better quality offered by hardcover production. It was also for her readers that Lindsey, who never lingers with a series, wrote six Malory books (so far).

The first book of that series, Love Only Once, marked a transition for the author. After years of crafting bantering heroes and heroines, this was her first outright humorous title exploring complex family ties. It was also during this time that Lindsey created one her best-loved characters, a Mock II wise-cracking supermachine named Martha. "She wouldn't leave me alone," Lindsey has said. "Long conversations and scenes were coming to me… No idea ever took such hold of me like that before." Martha became the personal computer of Tedra De Arr in Warrior's Woman, her first futuristic romance. "Warrior's Woman is probably still my favorite book, simply because of the humor and great bickering relationship between Tedra and Martha," Lindsey admits. "I still get a lot of laughs when I reread that book."

Continuing to surprise fans by varying the subgenres of her books, Lindsey released a comical Regency (The Heir) and a warm holiday tale (Home for the Holidays) in 2000, followed by a trip back to the future the next year with Heart of a Warrior. Last year, she revisited her Sherring Cross series with The Pursuit. As an encore, Lindsey shocked many by leaving longtime publisher Avon to join Pocket Books for the release of A MAN TO CALL MY OWN, a western comedy about twin sisters transplanted to Texas who fall for the same man. Life after 40 for Lindsey? The author muses, "At long last, it's time for Jeremy Malory to fall in love." And we'll be waiting for him!
