Midnight Surrender

Books are often born from a single idea. That's what happened with MIDNIGHT SURRENDER, the third in my vampire romance series from Pinnacle, on its way to the shelves in mid-April. Years ago, in the rush of high-tech, sci-fi movies, I remember watching The Highlander and was captivated by an early scene in which our immortal hero's new love interest was greeted by an old woman who, in fact, had been his lover in her youth. It was just a brief sidebar, but it made a great impression on me as I envisioned the tragic heartbreak of a love whose enemy was time. Imagine watching the man you love remaining eternally young while you yourself began to grow old.

It was this dilemma I brought to life in the first of my vampire romances, Midnight Kiss, when my heroine, Arabella refused to share the darkness with her husband, Louis, while there was still hope that he might find a way to escape his curse of the damned. Their entire relationship was built upon her representation of the life he longed for-to be mortal again. But unfortunately, it was not meant to be.

In MIDNIGHT SURRENDER, I took a great risk by using Louis and Arabella to illustrate the misery of a vampire's lot: true, they live forever, but at the tremendous cost of losing all they love. In it, the much admired Arabella has undertaken the task of selflessly finding another woman to care for and love her husband after she is gone. Her biggest obstacle isn't that he is a vampire, but rather Louis's own refusal to accept a replacement for the woman he's remained loyal to throughout their long and happy marriage.

Enter Cassie Alexander, their independent neighbor who flaunts Victorian restrictions by running her own magazine. She's Arabella's choice but hardly Louis', until a stalking of the young editor forces him into the reluctant role of rescuer. Cassie is encouraged by Arabella (who Cassie believes is Louis' grandmother); but falling in love with her mysterious neighbor is a greater threat to her safety than the sinister killer her magazine is trailing.

Will readers accept Arabella's sacrifice in the name of love and eternal hope? Says one critic "Ms. Gideon should be applauded for taking such a bold step while writing a great story." Get your hanky ready and join the dark and dangerous Louis Radman in this tale of poignant love, sinister peril and a reunion with all your favorite villains.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank Romantic Times for their Career Achievement nomination in the Western Romance category writing as Dana Ransom. What an honor to have a body of work recognized for excellence! Watch for WILD TEXAS BRIDE this August.

I'd love to hear your response to MIDNIGHT SURRENDER. For my newsletter listing upcoming releases and previous titles, send an SASE to: P.O. Box 526, Kalamazoo, MI 49004. It profiles my June Silhouette Intimate Romance, FOR MERCY'S SAKE, written as Nancy Gideon.
