I love the beach, and all sunshine sports. I played volleyball in high school and college. I’ve seen several professional volleyball games in California. What a great sport to play in a swim suit! The VB fans are amazing, and really support their favorite players. It’s exciting to see a service ‘ace’. To catch someone drop back and play deep. To watch the teams feed off the pressure.

Pro volleyball was my inspiration for my hero Dune Cates. Dune is thirty-six, tall, fit, and focused. He’s a no-strings-attached kind of guy. He grew up in the beach town of Barefoot William, Florida. When I wrote Barefoot William, I imagined it as being similar to Santa Monica, California.

Dune’s family owns the cement boardwalk which links to a wooden fishing pier that caters to fishermen, sun-worshippers, water sport enthusiasts, and tourists who don’t wear a watch on vacation. There’s a carousel, Ferris wheel, a merry-go-round, and an amusement arcade.

When the book opens, Dune has injured his wrist, and faces retirement. He’s fighting the inevitable.

Into his life comes Sophie Saunders. She’s twelve years younger than him, is not the least bit athletic, shy, and seeking her niche in life. She plans a summer of adventures. Dune supports her as she finds herself.

As Sophie gains confidence and makes real friends for the first time in her life, she finally realizes she is worthy of being loved. Dune is the man to love her.

My book has hot romantic interludes, but it’s also a humorous coming-of-age story with a sweet heroine.
