Elevator Pitch: She's a proper English spinster running from her past. He's a hard-bitten rancher with secrets of his own. Their worlds collide when she stumbles into his desperate struggle to protect his land from a vengeful madman. Then tragedy strikes, and only through courage and humor can they overcome the horrors of their pasts and find love again.

How long have you been writing? Forever. But actual book-style writing commenced 25 years ago, when I started on this book. Not that I wrote for the entire quarter-century; even I'm not that stubborn. But life has a way of interfering, and there were many years when I didn't write. About three years ago, I found the manuscript, dusted it off, changed the title to Pieces of Sky and sent it out to some contests to get feedback. After revisions, I queried agents, found Nancy Coffey and she sold the book to Wendy McCurdy at Berkley.

Where were you when you got the call? Sitting on my deck, looking at the mountains and wondering when I would get the call. I wish I could say I danced a jig of joy, but I have bad knees. I wish I could say I was surprised, but I have a wonderful agent and had full confidence that she could pull it off. I wish I could say I was flooded with gratitude and humility, but in all honesty, my first thought was, "about freaking time." (It had been 25 years, after all.) The wondrous reality of being accepted for publication didn't set in for several days, and when it did, I danced the jig, bad knees and all, and shouted "Late-bloomer baby boomer finally does it! Woo-hoo!"
