Victiora Alexander And The Legacy Of PLAY IT AGAIN, SAM

Sometimes, when you least expect it, life takes you in strange and wonderful directions.

When I started to write Play it Again, Sam my household consisted of my husband, my 12-year-old daughter and nine-year-old son and two hamsters, Hamlet and Snowball. (Doesn't it seem that every child with a white hamster calls it Snowball?) This book was supposed to feature a dog as a key character but we haven't had dogs for a number of years. Since this is a reincarnation story, with half set in 1818 and the other half contemporary, I needed an old, established breed. So naturally I did what we all do these days. I surfed the net.

I found Bearded Collies. The breed goes back at least 400 years. Beardies are smart, cute herding dogs, and they tend to be clowns. Exactly what I needed. The more I read, the more I was convinced this was the dog for my book. And for my family.

When the character of the dog in my story starting making his personality known, I discovered he talked exactly like Humphrey Bogart. How could I pass that up? Now, not only did I surf the net, I watched old Bogart movies, too. ("Don't touch that channel, kid, Mom's working here!") After all, I needed Bogart quotes. This was legitimate research, plain and simple.

Somehow it all came together for what my editor calls my most romantic book yet. Play it Again, Sam combines the tragic saga of star-crossed lovers with the fun-filled story of a modern relationship and a second chance to find love they only tasted in the past. And it's all tied together by a Bogie-loving canine named Sam.

Oh, in case you were wondering, we do have a Beardie now.

And yes, his name is Sam.

Like I said, sometimes life takes you in weird and wonderful directions.
