For her latest book outing, Ransom My Heart (Jan., Avon A), prolific fan favorite Meg Cabot is doing things a little differently. For starters, she's writing a medieval historical romance set in England, and
she's taking on a co-author, Princess Mia Thermopolis of Genovia (Cabot's heroine
in her Princess Diaries series).

"Historical romance has always been my first love, ever since I first saw Romancing the Stone starring Kathleen Turner" as a historical romance author, says Cabot. "I love any book where your heroine gets to wear long dresses, with which I have always been obsessed, be it the prom or because the historical context calls for it. I was exceedingly pleased when I learned Princess Mia shares this same love and planned on writing her own historical romance. I couldn't be prouder of her and hope she writes more historical romances. I'm certainly available to write more forewords if she needs them."

As for Princess Mia, she says, "Of all the things I've done in my life -- turning out to be a princess, bringing democracy to a country that's never experienced it before and finally passing freshman algebra, writing a historical romance is what I'm most excited about. I realize it's not as huge an accomplishment as inventing a robotic surgical arm, but while someone is getting operated on by that surgical arm, his daughter or wife could be escaping into the world of my historical romance, and forgetting -- just for a little while -- how nervous and upset she is.

"I've always loved escaping from my
own problems -- like my grandmother,
for instance -- into books, and now people can escape from theirs into mine! That's an accomplishment I'm really proud of," says the young ruler. "I just don't know how I'm going to squeeze this book-publicity stuff in with all my regular princess duties, starting my first year in college, having a boyfriend and stuff. But I'm sure I'll figure it out somehow."
