Georgia OKeefe described the Anasazi cliff dwellings in Mesa Verde as a little city of stone looking down with the calmness of eternity. More than a peaceful existence, however, is tangled within the canyon shadows. Of equal endurance is a dark mystery surrounding the Anasazi. That dark mystery endures as the legendary curse of the Anasazi.

A ranger at Mesa Verde has heard disembodied voices in the ruins yelling at him in unknown languages. Rangers routinely receive packages of shards from tourists with notes begging the rangers to return the unlucky artifact. In one story, a mans life nearly disintegrated into illness and loss of business after he stole an Anasazi axe. In a fitful sleep one night, he stumbled over the axe and nearly severed his foot. He also swore that a raven had led him to the axe.

Ravens occupy a special place in the Southwest. Ceremonial ravens have been found in ruins, carefully preserved in corn husks. Part of Indian mythology, they are also ever-present at prehistoric ruins, watchful curators over the Southwests open-air museums. At the end of my hikes over slick rock, I can be assured that at least one raven will greet me as the sentry to the ruin. One of the most intelligent birds, ravens are reputed to be able to remember hundreds, if not thousands, of treasures they might hide over a season. Visionary, wise and loyal, the raven was the only choice for Rheadas companion.

I hope you enjoy this latest suspenseful journey into the Southwest and that youll let me know what you think of my own answer to the tantalizing mysteries of the Anasazi.
