Tess Gerritsen Pulls No Punches With THE SINNER

As a former physician, Tess Gerritsen doesn't have trouble with medical details, and it shows in thrillers like The Surgeon and The Apprentice. To research her latest novel, The Sinner (Ballantine), Gerritsen ventured into a new world to learn about the lives of cloistered nuns.

"I'm not Catholic, but ever since watching 'The Sound of Music' as a child, I've been curious about cloistered nuns," she says. "What inspires them to live hidden from society? It's the mystery of what goes on behind locked gates that intrigues me."

In Gerritsen's latest, what goes on is murder — specifically, the killing of a young nun in her own convent. On the case are two characters from the author's last two novels, Boston detective Jane Rizzoli and medical examiner Maura Isles, whom Gerritsen wanted to re-visit.

"There were personal issues I wanted to explore," she says. "Did Jane's romance with FBI agent Gabriel Dean continue? What were the consequences of her affair? The mystery itself is merely background to these characters' continuing journeys."

Their adventures will continue in Gerritsen's next book, BODY DOUBLE, in which Maura comes home one night and finds in a parked car a dead woman—who looks exactly like her.
