Author's Message

For most aspiring writers, getting published is a big waiting game. You spend most of your time waiting for agents and editors to respond and then when you finally do get "The Call," it's still another year or two before you see your name in print.

Joan Johnston doesn't like to wait. She began writing in the early 1980s when the market was young. A successful attorney who handled multi-million dollar deals, Johnston was used to cutting to the chase. So she called Linda Marrow, then an assistant editor at Pocket whom she met at a conference months before, and invented a business trip to New York, saying she'd love to stop by to meet her—oh, and would Linda look at a synopsis and partial? In New York, Linda offered Johnston a deal on the spot and they had a half-hour chat, banging out issues like pseudonyms, cover-art preferences and advances. But the deal wasn't quite done. The confident new author promised Linda she'd think about it and sailed off to another meeting with an editor from Berkley. Berkley asked for revisions; Johnston called Marrow and immediately signed with Pocket. Her first book, A Loving Defiance, was published by Pocket's Tapestry Romance imprint in 1985.

Johnston released three historicals in five years, but the slow pace of publication left her itching to create more novels. She published two series romances with Silhouette in the late 1980s that didn't sell well. But the enterprising lady wouldn't give up, pitching nine more stories, all of which were rejected. Two years later, after giving a speech on brainstorming ideas, Johnston was approached by a Harlequin editor who asked for a proposal on an idea about wolves she'd used in her speech; however, the Silhouette editor Johnston had been pitching to wanted first look. So in 1988, NEVER TEASE A WOLF became the first release in a non-stop 14-year career with Silhouette.
Over the years, Johnston has switched houses with financial savvy, penning some of the genre's best Western historical romances, as well as English-set, Scottish-set and contemporary bestsellers for Pocket, Avon and finally, Dell (her current publisher). Readers delight in her interconnected family sagas (their family trees look more like a jungle!), like her Hawk's Way or Bitter Creek series.

This month sees the release of her 42nd book, a Silhouette collection of three connected short stories that tell the romance of Jake and Hope from HAWK'S WAY: THE SUBSTITUTE GROOM. With a recent deal to write two hardcovers and two paperbacks for Pocket Books, this prolific and popular writer has come full circle, ensuring readers that there will be plenty of Joan Johnston novels to savor for years to come.
