Most writers will tell you that every book is an emotional journey, but this one was especially so for me.

Snapped, the latest book in my Tracers series, opens with a sniper scene on a college campus. The incident is fictional, but it’s patterned after a real event in the city where I live. Years ago, Austin gained national attention when a highly-trained gunman climbed to the top of the clock tower at the University of Texas and started shooting. Sixteen people were killed in the 1966 incident, which came to be known as America’s original school shooting. I grew up hearing about this terrifying event from an eyewitness — my mother.

One of the questions I get asked most often is, “Where do you get your ideas?” For this book, the inspiration was very personal. Growing up, my mother shared her account of that fateful day. When our family would visit Austin for football games, we would see the site of the crime. The day I started writing the novel, I visited the UT campus and walked around the grounds, where you can still see holes in the concrete balustrades from the sniper’s bullets. Like the clock tower itself, the incident casts a shadow over our city.

The hero of Snapped is a military-trained sniper, Jonah Macon, who serves on the SWAT team called in to confront the gunman. To better understand Jonah’s job, I interviewed a police sniper, who helped me imagine what it feels like to train for years for that split second when innocent people’s lives are in your hands.

The story’s heroine is Sophie Barrett, an innocent bystander who gets caught in the crossfire. Sophie has been a part of the Tracers series since she first strode onto the scene in book one, Untraceable. Sophie is headstrong, passionate, and opinionated--a combination Jonah finds annoyingly irresistible. Sophie has faced danger in previous Tracers novels, but her courage is pushed to new limits in Snapped.

The opening scene of Snapped sets off a chain of mysterious events. Police believe they have an open and shut case, but Sophie has reason to believe otherwise. As she tries to convince Jonah and other investigators of her seemingly bizarre theory, she finds herself once again in a killer’s crosshairs.

Snapped is a romantic suspense, so Sophie and Jonah’s relationship is at the heart of the story. I feel a strong emotional connection to these characters, and I hope readers will, too. As I wrote the story, it was my goal to take readers on a journey that begins in a dark place, goes through twists and turns, and ends in a much brighter spot. I hope readers will enjoy the ride!
