Dear Reader,

I started writing on a kind of a dare.

It all started with fairy tales, Mother Goose, the Brothers Grimm, Walt Disney. Then, as a kid in grade school, I was famous for reading six books a week, written by the likes of L. Frank Baum and Lewis Carroll, Laura Ingalls Wilder and Louisa May Alcott. As a teenager I devoured everything from Louis L’Amour to Marion Zimmer Bradley, with a heavy dose of Charles Dickens, Charlotte Bronte, and of course Jane Austen. That segued nicely into Jude Devereax, Linda Howard, Kathleen Woodiwiss and, well, you get the idea.

After steeping myself in the genius of the greatest popular fiction writers of their times, how could I not have stories running in my mind on an endless loop? — or more accurately in my case, characters who won’t stop talking until I give them a story. I think anyone who is a voracious sampler of other peoples’ imaginations dreams of putting her own down on paper.

So when a sister who shared my love of other peoples’ words said, “You could do that,” how could I not try?  Of course, that was before I realized how hard it is to take a bunch of words and shape them into something that not only has a coherent story line, but creates characters that draw readers in, make them cry and cheer, and most of all fall in love.

In Temptation Bay, Maggie Solomon and Dexter Keegan are two characters who took up residence in my mind, along with the whole village of Windfall Island, because what’s a story without an interesting and entertaining cast of supporting characters?

Maggie is a tough, no-nonsense pilot with her own charter company and a towering sense of independence. Dex Keegan is a private investigator who came to Windfall Island on a quest to solve the mystery of Eugenia Stanhope, daughter of one of the wealthiest families in America, who’d been kidnapped as a baby nearly a century earlier. If, as Dex suspects, Eugenia survived, any descendants would be in line for an inheritance of truly epic proportions.

Windfall Island may be a small community, but that doesn’t make it any easier for Dex to find clues — not without his purpose becoming known and causing a frenzy that will make it impossible to get to the truth. Maggie refuses to help — until she can get Dex to tell her why he really came to Windfall Island. And when it turns out she might be Eugenia’s great granddaughter, she becomes the target of an unknown villain bent on eliminating anyone who even appears to be a Stanhope descendant.

I hope you’ll spend a little time on Windfall Island, starting with Dex and Maggie’s story, Temptation Bay, where they risk their lives to discover Eugenia’s fate, and find love along the way.  And be sure to let me know if you think I was right to take that dare!

Happy reading,

Anna Sullivan
