Dear Reader,

I don’t do well writing in silence. It tends to make me feel confined and a little claustrophobic. I can’t explain why that is, it just is. So when I’m writing I usually have a TV show or movie, that I’ve seen multiple times and don’t have to pay 100% attention to, playing in the background.

My number one go to is Friends. It is without a doubt my all time favorite show. The seasons have pretty much been playing on a continuous loop since last November. The thing is, when I get to that last episode of season ten it makes me so sad to say goodbye that I just have to start over. It’s a never-ending cycle.

When I was writing Undeniable, there was probably a good week or two that The Proposal was playing repeatedly. This is most likely why I picture a redheaded Ryan Reynolds when it comes to Jax. I’ve got no complaints because that man is very nice to look at.

This past summer I was feverishly writing the third book in the series. Unstoppable was written with The Newsroom playing on repeat. I think I went through that series about six times in a row. That’s ten episodes at an hour apiece. Aaron Sorkin might just be one of my favorite TV show creators. I had a bit of an obsession with The West Wing in college. And then I fell in love with Matt Albie, Danny Tripp, Jordan McDeere, Harriet Hayes, and everyone else from Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip.

There has also been many an FSU game playing in the background (GO NOLES!). I think that the war chant is part of my writing soundtrack at this point…and the cheering crowd.

But the editing process is different. I can’t have a TV show or movie playing because I have to be much more focused. Which also means that I cut back on the wine drinking…well, the writing/wine drinking that is. Ernest Hemingway had it right when he said: “Write drunk; edit sober.”

So when it comes to editing, I pretty much can only have music playing. Sometimes it’s the book soundtrack, other times it’s whatever CD I’m obsessed with at the time. This is how certain songs will appear on soundtracks. I’ve loved Adele since I heard “Chasing Pavements” for the first time. Whenever I hear “Rolling in the Deep” I’m belting it out like it’s nobody's business (my singing isn’t good singing, but I’m sure it would be entertaining to watch nonetheless). Adele’s “One And Only” is on the Undeniable soundtrack because of her performance of “Skyfall” at the Oscars. I immediately had an Adele relapse and her songs were put on repeat.

So as you can see, music and TV are my muses and they never let me down. I hope you all enjoy Undeniable as much as I loved writing it!

Happy Reading,

Shannon Richard
