Your new series uses virtual reality in the plot. What attracted you to this topic? I have always been a big fan of alternate reality stories (Katherine Neville's The Eight) as well as the geeky high-tech aspects of spy TV shows such as Alias and the Bond movies. Since I'm writing about a supersoldier-spy experiment, I thought it would be fun to incorporate cutting-edge technology such as virtual reality and brain-entrainment hypnosis into my story. The more I researched this topic, the more fascinated I became.

Have you ever used any kind of virtual-reality software or game? Since
I work in construction, I've seen and used virtual-reality designing machines for model homes. This is, of course, nothing compared to what they're doing in funded projects in universities right now.

How many books about Helen "Hell" Roston will there be? I've planned for three right now, but I can see Helen and her commando continuing their love story like J.D. Robb's Eve and Roarke.

What is it about this heroine that appealed to you? I find Helen fascinating in her choices. She has never known a "normal" life because she was picked up as an orphan by her agency. She wants more, so she sees her new contract -- the supersoldier-spy experiment -- as a stepping-stone to another life.

The funny thing to me is that she doesn't think beating out a bunch of
guys and becoming the best candidate
is a hint that she isn't exactly normal.
Of course, not knowing what normal is becomes a challenge to me, as a writer, to understand what Helen really wants. In each book, this woman shows a side of herself that, I hope, will give her her answer. -- Faygie Levy
