Wicked at Heart

"The sex was great." With an opening like that, how could WICKED AT HEART be anything but hot, hot, hot? Avon is touting it as my best book to date, and early reviews are echoing the sentiments of that opening line: "the sex is great!"

But WICKED AT HEART is more than hot sex. It's a deeply moving Beauty and the Beast tale packed with adventure, danger and passion. It also breaks some new ground for me for, unlike my earlier books, with their light, humorous tone, it is a dark, emotional tale of a brooding English lord tortured by his past, savaged by his inner demons and driven by revenge.

And what a magnificent hero he is, too! But Damon Andrew Phillip deWolfe, the sixth Marquess of Morninghall, is so far gone in darkness that he's lost the ability to love, to feel, or even to see beyond the prison of his own pain. He finds a cruel mockery in beautiful things. He allows no one to get close to him. He is dark, diabolical and very, very dangerous.

It was a real challenge to find a woman courageous and strong enough to stand up to such a man. But I found her in Lady Gwyneth Evans Simms, a beautiful social reformer who is not afraid to turn Damon's life upside down. When she clashes with him over the fate of prisoners of war, it seems as though this unlikely pair will never find happiness. But the intrepid Gwyneth is Damon's match in every way, and when she sees a flicker of light in the marquess' anguished soul, she realizes that only she can challenge him-and show him, once again, the healing power of love.
