Bring on the Cheers

Gimme a "C!" That's a "C" for romantic suspense author
and former Kansas City Chiefs cheerleader Carla Cassidy.

Yep, you read that right, Cassidy, who's known for her stand-alone novels and category romances, was, back in the early '70s, a cheerleader for an NFL football team. She was
with the Chiefs for three years and even was a dancer for a show band that toured up and down the East Coast -- until she met her husband, Frank. Then her life changed and she decided to try her hand at writing.

"I became a housewife and was raising a stepson, and there were a lot of empty hours in the day. I remembered
how much I loved to read and write. That's when I started reading again voraciously and decided to try my hand at fiction writing," Cassidy recalls. The author doesn't remember much about the first book she tried to write, but she does recall the story: "The heroine was a ballet dancer, and the hero a choreographer. It was awful, but I thought at the time that it was brilliant. Needless to say, it didn't sell."

It would be nearly a decade until her first work, a young-adult romance for Bantam's Sweet Dreams line, was sold. She followed that up with a sale to Silhouette in 1991 and was on
her way. To date, she's written nearly 100 novels. Her latest,
this month's Signet release Without a Sound, is about a woman whose sister has been murdered, and the only witness
to the crime is her young niece. "Of course there's a killer who hasn't finished yet and a hunky psychiatrist."

Next month, Cassidy has a new installment in her Wild West Bodyguard series, the Silhouette Intimate Moments novel The Bodyguard's Return.

What would the dancer–cheerleader–author like to do next? "I've been told I have a wicked sense of humor, and I haven't done a really humorous book in a long time," she says. "I'd like to go back and do some of that. I love paranormals.

I did some for the [now defunct] Silhouette Shadows line, and I'd love to do more." -- Faygie Levy
