2013 RT Convention Guide: Why Teen Day Makes An Excellent Mother/Daughter Date

There's nothing quite as special as spending time with a loved one, and if you're the parent of a teen, you know getting quality one-on-one time with your child isn't always easy. Whether you're a mother or father looking to spend time with your daughter or son, if your kid is a bookworm, RT Booklovers Convention 2013 Teen Day, on May 4 from 11:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. would make the ideal day trip for anyone in the Kansas City area. Below are five reasons why this event can't be missed.

Teen readers with their swag bags from the 2012 Teen Day

Reason #1:

It's cheap. We know entertainment can be costly (Have you seen some of those e-book prices lately?), but for less than the cost of two movie tickets and a large popcorn, one young reader (20 or under) and their parent or chaperone can get 9 hours of mixing and mingling with their favorite authors and fellow readers. Registration is only $25 and the event lasts from 11:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Have we convinced you already? Register for the event here by selecting "Teen Day Pass" from the drop-down menu.

Reason #2:

The experience. Teen Day isn't just one event, it's an entire day made up of many events for readers and authors. The day kicks off at 11:00 a.m. with our Giant Book Fair, where more than 80 different YA authors will be signing in YA Alley, a designated section of the book fair for young adult authors. Then, from 2:30 until 6:00 p.m. readers will enjoy an assortment of workshops and panels, ranging from Author Speed Dating, where readers get a chance to spend some quality time with authors, who rotate tables every 10 minutes, to Author Speed Reading, where authors are challenged to read a compelling excerpt from their latest novel in a short amount of time. Then, starting at 6:15 p.m., Teen Day attendees will end their evening at the Teen Day party where they can enjoy light food and drink, dig through their swag bags, get a chance to catch up with any authors they may have missed, and make friends with other readers. You can view the full Teen Day schedule here.

Reason #3:

The authors. We mentioned the 80+ authors, right? Several of the genre's biggest names will be there, including Kelley Armstrong, Gayle Forman, Richelle Mead, Maureen Johnson, Veronica Roth, Colleen Houck, Melissa Marr, Rachel Vincent and many, many more will be available for photos, autographs, hugs and high fives! See the full list of authors attending Teen Day here.

Reason #4:

The tears. We're talking good tears, people. The kind that flow when you're meeting your hero and you just can't contain your emotions. It's been known to happen to a teen or two at Teen Day, and it's honestly one of the most touching things we've seen during the RT Booklovers Convention. Teen Day readers are just so excited to be meeting so many of the authors they love, and it definitely shows.

Reason #5:

Because chances are you're probably a reader, too. Let's be real here, YA isn't just for teens. Maybe you've picked up one of your child's books, wondering what exactly they were reading, and got hooked yourself. Or maybe you've always been a YA reader. Either way, if you're a fan, you'll get just as much enjoyment out of the event as your child, and who better to share it with? Alternatively, if you're an adult romance reader and feel comfortable letting your teen experience Teen Day solo, you can meet some of genre fiction's brightest stars at FAN-tastic Day, a fan-oriented day for adults happening at the RT Convention during the same time as Teen Day that's open to the public for only $50 per ticket.
