2013 RT Convention Outfits: Elisa's Picks
May might seem like it's far off, but the truth is the RT Booklovers Convention is only a few short weeks away! Which means if you're planning on attending the full week of books, babes (yes, we mean you) and shenanigans, you've got some packing to do! There's a full schedule of panels, workshops, events, and of course parties. Clearly, one outfit a day isn't going to cut it. So bust out those extra large suitcases because the RT staff is bringing you their picks for what to wear to the themed evening events and nighttime parties at this year's RT Convention in Kansas City May 1-4. Eager for inspiration? Take a gander at RT web editor and social media coordinator Elisa Verna's 'best of' looks.
Sadly, there is no official steampunk party this year (Although if you want to don your finest steampunk threads, please do!), but that doesn't mean you shouldn't bring a corset. (In fact, if i were to make an emergency preparedness kit for RT, it would include a corset.) Kick off RT Con Wednesday evening at Rosie Gulch's Gals Get-Together, a saloon-themed party hosted by a group of fantastic authors. Not a corset kind of girl? You can always stick a plume in your hair and hide a garter under your skirt!
Ellora's Cave threw one of my favorite parties last year, and I'm sure this year will be no different. In case your epic 70s frocks made the trip to Goodwill long ago, or you never experienced the decade, grab a festive, colorful dress and a pair of (somewhat) practical Go Go boots. Or, at the very least get yourself some fun disco mirror jewelry and a Farrah Fawcett wig!
Samhain's themed social events are always a blast, and this year's Samhain Safari just gives you an excuse to pack more leopard print. You know, just in case you needed one. A pair of comfy leopard or zebra print leggings and a fun T-shirt, complimented by fun accessories, a hot pair of heels and an ironic old man safari hat will have everyone shouting "Me-OW!"
What!? You're telling me you don't want to dress like a giant pink and red cupcake in front of hundreds of fellow readers and authors!? What is wrong with you? Ok, so maybe the dress is a bit much, that's fine. But for the 30th Anniversary Ball on Thursday night, you should at least bust out some diamonds (fake are fine, this is RT, not the royal court) and a hot pair of ruby slippers (which you can wear again to Avon's Red Slipper Lounge Friday night). There will be no such thing as too much glitter or sparkle at this party, I can assure you.
Heather Graham's Friday night bash is perfect for those looking to show off their dark side. Fishnets and black lace are never a bad idea, and zombie makeup will definitely have heads turning your way! Dress it all up with spooky accessories and a fun pillbox hat. And of course, a great pair of pumps.
If you've survived to see Saturday night, you won't want to skip the Carina Press Cocktail Party and the Harlequin party (they raffle off some great prizes), but you may want to keep things comfy. However, don't sacrifice class just because the week is winding down. This two-toned dress with sequin detail paired with a smart pair of flats (your feet will be sore) and fun jewelry would be ideal. Plus, you can never go wrong with a nude lip and smoky eye makeup.
