2014 RT Convention Preview: American "Idol" Writing Competition
Alright, RT Convention attendees, it’s time to kick your writing into gear and whip your manuscripts into shape because when we hit New Orleans in May we’ll be hosting the American “Idol” Writing Competition! The prize? One lucky writer will win a one-year contract/mentorship with two of the industry’s top literary agents. How’s that for a grand prize? Let’s take a look at the finer details, shall we? Ready, set, write!
What: American “Idol” Writing Competition
When: Friday, May 16, 2014 1:30 - 3:45 PM
Details: To enter the competition, writers must submit up to the first three chapters of their manuscript for review by May 1, 2014 (extended from the original April 15 deadline). Finalists will be chosen prior to the convention.
Aspiring and published writers of all genres are encouraged to enter, but the main categories are: Fiction (Romance, Mystery, Sci-Fi/Fantasy, New Adult, etc…), YA (all Young Adult and/or children’s literature) and Erotic Romance.
If you are a finalist, a panel of agents and editors will read and judge your submission. But the real fun comes from the audience’s participation. In the spirit of American Idol and other reality TV competitions, audience members will also vote on their favorite submissions and the submission with the most votes will receive bonus points.
After the votes have been counted, the first place winner will be announced at the end of the workshop.
Prizes: The first place winner will be the submission/entrant with the highest overall score, regardless of category. They will win a one-year contract/membership with literary agents Nicole Resciniti of The Seymour Agency and Louise Fury of The Bent Agency.
The winning Erotic Romance entrant will receive automatic consideration from Loveswept editor, Sue Grimshaw.
The winning Fiction entrant will receive automatic consideration from Forever and Forever Yours editor, Leah Hultenschmidt.
The winning Young Adult entrant will receive automatic consideration from Entangled Teen and DigiTeen editor, Liz Pelletier.
