We've certainly heard about the dangers of all work and no play. You've got nothing to fear at the RT Convention, because we have plenty of both on the agenda! We've already previewed some evening parties, so today it's time to get down to business by highlighting a sample of the business and self-publishing workshops that will help take your career to the next level. Here we go!
Let’s start with the gritty business, shall we? Starting Wednesday at 8:45 a.m., the Boardroom on the first floor of the venue will play host to the Author Services Connection, a hub where authors and publishers can schedule one-on-one meetings to discuss working together. Publicists, freelance editors and cover artists will also have the chance to connect with others and drum up new business. The Author Services Connection room will remain open through Friday.
Later on Wednesday, attendees can join a group of editors and authors to discuss the Six Degrees of the Author/Editor Relationship. Carina Press editor Mallory Braus will moderate guests including Amanda Arista, Karina Cooper, Dana Marie Bell, Denise Tompkins and Ellora's Cave editor Elizabeth London.
Thursday offers many insightful panels, including Understanding Author Contracts where Cat Adams and Emily Mah Tippetts will take authors through the ins and outs of author contracts. Want to know what “First Serial Rights” are? Curious about rights reversion? Then you’ll definitely want to grab a seat in Balcony N on the fourth floor at 4:00 p.m. for this session!
On the self-publishing side of things, we have the Cover Your Assets! Create Knockout, Hot-Selling Covers for All Genres panel on Wednesday. It’s no secret that booklovers do, in fact, judge books by their covers, so yours need to stand out! Bestselling author Carole Nelson Douglas will explain the dos and don’ts of cover design, whether you’re an artist yourself or are working with a designer. Douglas will also discuss typeface, stock images and how to brand your book. For more details, click here!
Thursday also offers The Big Easy - Self-Publishing for Beginners, an “inspiring and upbeat” workshop for aspiring and already established authors considering diving into self-publishing, and looking for a little guidance. A host of authors will walk you through the process and help you jumpstart your new venture!
And then, on Friday, bestselling author Kristen Ashley and Smashwords founder Mark Coker will sit down to discuss the gritty details of self-publishing and hear from Kristen about her journey to success. Formatting, cover design and pricing are all topics that will be tackled! For location, time and full details, click here!
These are just a handful of the exciting and insightful workshops the RT Convention has to offer to help authors of all levels kick their careers into gear.
