Our 2014 RT Booklovers Convention officially starts on Wednesday, May 14, but did you know Monday and Tuesday are jampacked with pre-convention activities? No? In addition to our awesome Tuesday reader events, we've also got some great activities for writers, too!
First up we have Linnea Sinclair and Stacey Kade’s Pre-Con Writer’s Boot Camp! This exciting writing intensive will take aspiring authors on a two-day learning spree full of panels and workshops. There’s an optional meet-and-greet dinner Sunday night, but the official boot camp begins on Monday with breakfast and an introduction focusing on what it means to write for publication. Some particularly enticing panels include Monday’s “Goal, Motivation and Conflict” and “”Advanced Plotting Theories.” The fun continues through Tuesday and attendees will be treated to even more inspiring panels, including “Conquering the Query & Synopsis” and “Industry Panel: The Agent/Editor/Pros Tell-All!,” an informative Q&A with a group of editors and agents.
When asked what she hopes attendees will gain from the boot camp, Stacey said, “Not all techniques work for all writers, obviously, but my deepest hope is that ... the writers in that room will find something that works for them.” Even as an instructor, Stacey gains just as much as the writers she teaches. “I’ve been helping out with this program for a few years now, and I always walk away with some new bit of information or a different perspective. I love it!”
One thing Linnea likes most about the boot camp is the sense of community it instills amongst the writers. She said, “The beauty of a boot camp is that it creates for the writer a network of ‘like minds,’ of people who not only understand what you’re trying to do, but who are doing the same things themselves.” But the absolute best part for Linnea is watching the attendees’ “aha” moments when they connect with a piece of advice or instruction. “I’ve seen students bounce in their seats then yank out their netbooks and start typing furiously because something just clicked. It’s awesome to watch it unfold.”
Now that’s the kind of boot camp we’d willingly attend! If you’re unsure if this two-day intensive is right for you, click here to read testimonials from some bestselling authors!
Also on Tuesday is Cherry Adair’s pre-convention Intensive Plotting Program, where Cherry will walk attendees through her plotting strategies. This step-by-step introduction to using Post-It notes and plotting boards offers writers a unique and colorful technique that will help turn their ideas into solidified plots. The program will conclude with exclusive one-on-one critique sessions with Cherry!
And finally, also on Tuesday, Jane Litte from Dear Author and Sarah Wendell from Smart Bitches, Trashy Books are hosting the 2014 Book Blogger Conference in conjunction with the RT convention. This event aims to “provide an opportunity for book bloggers and online reviewers to come together and meet in person, discuss issues relevant to our community and learn from one another.” Registration for the Book Blogger Conference is separate from the RT registration. Monday and Tuesday are sure to be just as exciting as the rest of the convention, so don’t miss out on these events! We can’t wait to see you all in New Orleans in May!
