Comic Books - There Is An App For That

BY Morgan Doremus, JUNE 29, 2010 | PERMALINK

DC Comics launched an app last week that makes its comics available for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. Prices range from free to $2.99 per issue and digital comics will be released the same day as print versions. Payment is quick and easy as the user makes purchases through their iTunes account.

This weekend I downloaded the app and within two minutes was looking over a variety of DC comics. What did I find? All of the usual DC fare including Superman, Jonah Hex, Justice League, Green Lantern and many more. The app also includes a section for featured comics, one for free reads and another for new releases. (I also really liked the browse feature which allowed me to search the comic database by series, genre, creator, imprint or storylines.)

Katherine Garbera And The Timeless Romance Of The Pirate

BY admin, JUNE 28, 2010 | PERMALINK

Author Katherine Garbera takes a look at the romance of modern-day pirates.

Pirates are usually found in historical romances and to be honest I love a good pirate romance. When I started writing The Pirate there were a few stories in the news about the Somali pirates and it gave me the spark of an idea. This book is the second in my Savage Seven series and I wanted to do something different than The Mercenary, which took place in South Africa in the diamond mines there. And to be honest I fell a little in love with the entire African continent when I was doing my research.

A Lesson In Language From The Latest Mary Blayney Heroine

BY admin, JUNE 28, 2010 | PERMALINK

You must agree with me that "no" is the most important word in the English language. My name is Mia Castellano and, as the heroine of Mary Blayney's Courtesan's Kiss, I say "No!" as often as I have to in order to make my wishes known. Frankly I am tired of being seen as difficult when all I want is to be independent. I am seriously considering turning my back on polite society and becoming a courtesan. As a courtesan I will have the freedom I long for. Finally, I will be able to make my own choices from where I want to live to whom I count as friends and lovers.

With the end of my engagement to Viscount William Bendasbrook I am on the outs with the ton, not that London society has ever truly welcomed me. I am Italian and from a musical family, just respectable enough to be invited almost everywhere, but not well bred enough to be given vouchers to Almacks.

E-Books In The Public Domain

BY admin, JUNE 24, 2010 | PERMALINK

I received an email from reader Lynn about MyPadMedia selling access to free books. MyPadMedia was using Feedbooks feed improperly but the email prompted an issue I have wanted to talk about for a bit but never gotten around to: The sale of public domain books through every Internet retailer out there.

*****

Dear Jane:

I see promotions for e-book readers saying that the e-book readers come with $100 of free books but is this really a great deal?

~ Curious

*****

Dear Curious:

Short Answer: It really is no deal at all. What the e-book device sellers are doing is collecting a number of popular books in the public domain and preloading them onto your reader. This can actually be a hassle when you go to power up your e-book device and have 100 unwanted books you'll need to delete.
