RT Booklovers Convention 2011: Teen Day

BY RT BOOK REVIEWS, APRIL 10, 2011 | PERMALINK

This year was RT Booklovers Convention inaugural Young Adult reader event - Teen Day! All Saturday, teen and adult fans celebrated the genre with group chats, special book readings, workshops and a fabulous party. Readers met Kelley Armstrong, Jennifer Lynn BarnesRichelle Mead, Holly Black, Melissa de la Cruz, YA program captain Melissa Marr along with over thirty other authors.

The first event, author "speed dating", was a huge hit. The room was packed with grinning teenage girls (and a few boys) as they got to talk with some of their very favorite authors. The locals came out in force to support the genre they loved and discuss stories and characters.

A few doors down, the author speed-reading was full of teens but absolutely silent as YA authors did a session of readings from their recent releases and upcoming works. Readers were hanging on the authors' every word.

RT Booklovers Convention 2011: Meet Mr Romance 2011

BY RT BOOK REVIEWS, APRIL 09, 2011 | PERMALINK

Today nine would-be romance cover models competed for the chance to be RT's Mr. Romance 2011. This year's Mr. Romance will be featured on the cover of a Kensington romance novel, star in a Circle of Seven book trailer and receive a cash prize. Each of the nine contestants had a different looks and unique personalities, however, all were full of charm.

During one part of the competition, the men walked the stage dressed up as different classic heroes, demonstrating their versatility and modeling abilities. Among the heroes portrayed were an old fashioned lord, a Scottish laird, a gladiator and even a steampunk investigator. Attendees even got a special treat, they were serenaded by Sean McDermott, a veteran of the soap opera Guiding Light, who has just released his own album, You're Not Alone.

When all was said and done, the crowd went wild for each of the good looking contestants with hearts of gold.

But in the end, only one man could take home the honor of being Mr. Romance 2011 ... Len Gunn. Len originally got involved in the competition through a friend of a friend, but says it was a great experience.

RT Booklovers Convention 2011: Saturday's Giant Book Fair Bonanza

BY RT BOOK REVIEWS, APRIL 09, 2011 | PERMALINK

Thousands of booklovers came out for this year's book fair. Fans spent time with over 300 authors who were signing books and talking about their upcoming releases. Many of the readers had long lists full of the names of authors they were looking forward to meeting.

The RT Staffers each had their own lists of authors they were looking forward to seeing during convention. Morgan's fan girl moment came when she met the erotica author who is her new "guilty pleasure", author Jayne Rylon. RT Reviewer Victoria Frerichs was excited to meet Kate Elliott saying, "I've been a fan of her work for years and ... The Cold Magic Series is phenomenal." And RT Senior Reviewer Kathe Robin said she simply couldn't choose between the excellent historical romance authors!

At today's book fair, we got a chance to chat with some of the authors who were signing today and asked them which of their fellow authors attending convention they were most excited to meet...

RT Booklovers Convention 2011: Author Chat With Coulter, Adair and Hurwitz

BY Whitney Sullivan, APRIL 08, 2011 | PERMALINK

There are millions of memorable moments at the RT Booklovers Convention every year, but one of the standout panels that I attended this year was the Author Chat with Catherine Coulter, Cherry Adair and Gregg Hurwitz. The three authors candidly spoke about their writing, books, careers and lives in this special hour-long session.

With Coulter's background as thriller and historical romance author, the contemporary and paranormal romantic suspense perspective from Cherry Adair and Gregg Hurwitz's experiences producing/screenwriting and writing mysteries, each author brought different ideas to the discussion. And that was even before they started taking questions from the audience!

RT BOOKLovers Convention 2011: Author Chat With Dean Koontz

BY RT BOOK REVIEWS, APRIL 08, 2011 | PERMALINK

This morning readers were treated to a special author chat with the elusive author Dean Koontz. RT's Stacey Agdern shares her favorite moments of the chat.

Those who had the chance to listen to Dean Koontz speak at this years RT convention got a treat. Koontz is a charming man, who seemed to take the slings and arrows he’s faced as an author over the long years of his publishing career with good humor.

In fact, Koontz’s theme for his presentation was shattering the myths of the glorious things that are supposed to happen to an author once they are published. It’s a theme that has been discussed many times during different workshops at the conference, but Koontz’s descriptions of what can, and does, go wrong during an author’s career sounded much like a scene out of a National Lampoons’ or Mel Brooks' movie.

Koontz talked about the craziness of the first time he was sent out on a book tour with humor and grace, but the underlying idea was that they are hard work. It is gratifying to meet fans, but exhausting. And yet recalling an instance of finding a gem of a restaurant in an unexpected place in San Francisco brought a smile to his face all these years later.

It was all about the authors at this morning's Kensington Mixer. Fans got to take pictures with some of their favorites, like Jacquelyn Frank, Victoria Alexander, Kate Douglas and Rebecca Zanetti (pictured below). Readers also got to mingle with the contestants for the annual Mr. Romance competition and were treated to pastries — including some special treats from Joanne Fluke! And then Kensington gave out tattoos of vampire bite marks to promote their new campaign, "Get Sucked Into Kensington!" and announced a few special Kensington contests that will run during the convention. They also raffled off gift baskets and gave everyone special goodie bags. And that was all before 10 A.M.!

There's a lot more convention to come, so check the RT Daily Blog all weekend long for more about the parties, workshops and book fair coverage!
