Morgan & Whitney Dish: Nora Roberts' The Next Always

BY RT BOOK REVIEWS, NOVEMBER 30, 2011 | PERMALINK

This month Nora Roberts kicks off her new The Inn BoonsBoro Trilogy with The Next Always. The series follows the Montgomery family’s project to bring an old inn back to life and maybe find love along the way. In this installment, the middle Montgomery brother, Beckett, finally gets a chance to make a move on the woman he’s always had a sweet spot for … but will he fit into this widow’s ready-made family or is he not cut out to be a father to three young boys?

Morgan: I’ve been reading La Nora for years and years and years. And I can say without a doubt this book is a Nora Roberts (capital N, capital R) through and through.

Whitney: But what genre is this Nora book? She is known for stories with paranormal elements with fairies and ghosts, romantic suspenses and then the sweet, small town contemporary romances ...

Morgan: This falls in the last category, however, even with the rock solid footing in very realistic small town life, we also may see a ghost or two ...

Karen Erickson On Historical Romance Novellas — With Giveaway!

BY RT BOOK REVIEWS, NOVEMBER 30, 2011 | PERMALINK

Want to read a hot romance but pre-holiday preparations have you too busy for a full-length book? We suggest you check out novellas to get your romance story fix. Today, author Karen Erickson tells us why she loves to read (and write) these quick stories and gives us a sneak peek at the latest in her Merry Widows series, "Her Christmas Pleasure." Plus, just in time for the holidays, Karen is giving readers a chance to win a gift card!

Sigh…I love a good historical romance. The first adult romance I ever read — after cutting my teeth on teen romances, especially the Silhouette ones — was The Flame and the Flower. I also became hooked on Jude Deveraux’s various series (Montgomerys and Taggerts — LOVED them all!) as well as LaVyrle Spencer’s heartfelt historical romances. I always wanted to write a historical romance but my first attempts oh, so long ago were…

Awful. Terrible. Which left me discouraged and I gave up (with reason, trust me).

Holiday Gift Ideas: A Handmade Quilt

BY RT BOOK REVIEWS, NOVEMBER 30, 2011 | PERMALINK

There are few things more relaxing than curling up with a good book and a hot cup of tea under a cozy quilt and reading the day away. But what do you do if you’re missing the essential part of that equation, the handmade quilt? If the skill of crafty quilting skipped you completely, as it did for RT’s Whitney, she suggests that you head online to let someone else do the heavy-lifting of quilt creation, leaving you free to do all the enjoying.

Today, book lover and quilt enthusiast Helen, the owner of Cute and Cuddly Quilts, talks about what got her interested in quilting and what types of homemade products you’ll find on her website. Fun fact: Helen also makes custom quilts!

***

Why did you start quilting?

My grandma quilted in her spare time and taught me to quilt. It's something only the two of us did together so it was special.

What is your favorite quilting project you've ever worked on?

I think my favorite is the family tree quilt I did this year for my grandmother.

We'd love to know which book is your favorite to read when you are curled up under a quilt?

That's a tough question. I love so many different books and authors, but the ones I've most read lately would be C.H. Admirand and Katie Lane's latest books.

Morgan & Elisa Dish: Three Sci Fi Side Dishes

BY RT BOOK REVIEWS, NOVEMBER 23, 2011 | PERMALINK

Just in time for the holidays, the RT web team is doing something a bit different for this week’s Dish. Instead of digging into one full length novel, Morgan and Elisa are sampling three short stories as Side Dishes. So what’s on the menu? First up is Cherie Priest’s “Wishbones”, a horrifying, monstrous tale. Then they move into Cassandra Clare’s tale of unrequited love in the steampunk short “Some Fortunate Future Day”. And finally is “Hello, Moto” by the incredible science fiction/fantasy author Nnedi Okorafor. After joining Morgan and Elisa on a trip through these otherworldly tales, you can give each a try since all three short stories are FREE online reads.

***

Morgan: I found Cherie Priest’s “Wishbones” to be a nod to classic horror stories. I mean, we’ve got a rural setting with unsuspecting victims and a giant monster.

Elisa: While the text did have a lot in common with a horror story, I thought that what set Priest's work apart from others was the multiple narratives. “Wishbones” takes place during two eras, present day and the 1860s during the Civil War.
