The author’s latest full-length novel, Deathless, got an RT Top Pick in the April 2011 issue of the magazine. The story, which re-works a traditional Russian folktale, follows a Marya, a girl who becomes tangled in the events of 20th century Russia, such as Stalin's influences on the country and the siege of Leningrad, even as she has one foot firmly in the world of fairytales.
“White Lines on a Green Field” is another story about people caught between two worlds. When the mysterious Coyote comes to Bunny’s high school, everything seems to change. However Bunny is the only one who seems to notice that mass pregnancies, uncontrolled fighting and lax adult supervision — are not normal. Although the football team’s sudden winning streak has occupied everyone’s attention, something is rotten at West Centerville High.
In this short story Valente perfectly captures the reckless feeling of embarking on a dangerous romance because although this story is by no means a typical tale of love, Coyote is an almost perfect bad boy. But the twist that comes at the end will leave readers retrospective. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself mulling over “White Lines” at the end of the story the same way you reflect on a summer fling at the end of August.
