It is no exaggeration to say that everyone who knows me knows that I absolutely adore Nalini Singh’s writing. With her paranormal romance novels, Nalini never ceases to transport me to other worlds (or I should say alternate worlds) where shapeshifters, vampires and angels abound.
After making a name for herself — and stealing this reader’s heart — with her Psy/Changeling series, Nalini went on to create her Archangels books. At first the series focused on the Archangel of New York, Raphael, as he fought for power within the Cadre, the hierarchy of powerful angels, only to be distracted when his heart was unexpectedly conquered by vampire hunter Elena Deveraux. Raphael and Elena’s love story is complex and took several books to complete. But when these two finally found themselves on (relatively) even ground, it was time for another couple in the Archangel series to find each other.
Now, I, for one, was a little apprehensive when I heard the series was getting a new hero. (Let’s face it, Raphael is a hard act to follow.) But after reading Archangel’s Blade, my fears were put to rest. With this story, Nalini successfully transitioned the series’ focus to Raphael’s inner circle, the Seven, so that each warrior would get a book. And as an added bonus, Archangel’s Blade also illustrated that Singh will not change her characters to make them fit into a traditional mold. The book's hero, deadly vampire Dimitri, was not defanged in the story, even as his attitude was tempered by his new relationship.
Once I finished Dimitri’s story, my mind spun with possibilities about who might be next in the Seven to get their happily ever after. I assumed that either the charming Illium or the dangerously sexy Venom would get their turn. But to my surprise, Nalini announced on her blog that it is spymaster Jason whose story we will be reading next.
Jason, with his jet-black wings that seem to absorb light, is quite an interesting choice because he is so secretive. From previous stories, readers know that he arrived at the angel sanctuary, the Refuge, fully grown, which is very unusual for an angel. Jason also has a tattoo that covers part of his face that has never been explained. (If you look very, very closely at the book cover, you will see the outline of the ink on his left cheek.)
I imagine that part of Jason’s reluctance to discuss himself and his past is what makes him a good spymaster — he is used to staying hidden and watching others. So I’m very excited that this mysterious warrior will step into the forefront in Archangel’s Storm. But for all of the secrets that are promised to be revealed in this September release, one secret that Nalini will not reveal is who Jason will be paired with. Without many unattached females in the Archangel series, it looks like we may be getting a new character!
