There are so many new book deals being made in the Young Adult market that we’ve decided to devote a new special column to them. Here are five of the new YA book deals that we can't wait for — just after they have been announced.
What’s going to happen when a guardian angel in a rehab program for wayward souls accidentally kills his female charge and then can’t manage to get her into heaven? The book — Ten Commandments for the Dead by Martha Brockenbrough — isn’t slated for publication until next summer, but we were hooked after learning that among all the other mishaps this angel “…may or may not cause lasting psychological damage to a squirrel"; with that one line we get the sense that this is going to be a humor-filled read!
And in another “Angelic” tale, the heroine of Karri Thompson’s Amateur Angel accidentally gets sent back to Earth as a guardian angel after stepping into the wrong line in the afterlife. But maybe things aren’t all bad? Her new charge is the teen rock star that happened to be her celebrity crush. Find out what happens when this book hits shelves in May 2012!
A case of seasickness gets the ball rolling in Marni Bates’ Fauxmance. While on a cruise this teen heroine seeks refuge from the rocky waters in an empty cabin that turns out to not be so empty after all, a major pop star is currently occupying it. But when Hollywood learns of what everyone presumes to be an ill-concealed hook up, they don’t realize that one of the members of the couple was actually just seasick. Now the heroine and the singer must make their “relationship” believable or risk ruining his band’s squeaky-clean image. Readers can expect this tale in stores during 2012.
Ken Baker is set to debut his first YA novel Fangirl in the fall of 2012. This story follows a different teenage pop star and the superfan he ends up falling for. Ken backer is an E! Chief News Correspondent, so we’re looking forward to a story that promises to be a backstage pass to the world of pop stars.
In Food Fight by Kelly Fiore a teenage girl lands a role on a cooking-centric reality show, think Top Chef for teens. But things heat up quickly in the competition, and with her fellow reality show contestants. There’s no word yet on when we can expect to see this book in stores, but we can’t wait. (Our fingers are crossed that the story will include some delicious recipes as well!)
And here’s your Friday Freebie:
The details are scarce about Tandem the newest novel from Anna Jarzab. But the story is about a physics student whose prom night is full of some unexpected twists — not the least of which is that the student ends up in a parallel universe. They are keeping such a tight lid on this, we don’t even know if the physics student is a guy or a girl, but we promise to keep you updated as soon as new information comes out!
